Mending a Relationship

Jill was living in a run-down hotel room. Her Supplemental Security Income (SSI) had been reduced, and she faced homelessness.

She constantly bickered with her mother over money. GSI became representative payee for Jill. The case manager discovered that the Social Security Administration had withheld checks because they assumed Jill's seasonal job was permanent. SSI was reinstated, restoring food stamps and Medicaid. Jill was moved into an affordable apartment. She even had enough money to buy new clothes and furnishings for her home.

Now that money worries are no longer the main topic of discussion, Jill and her mother are getting along better than ever. The once-frugal mother is helping Jill decorate her apartment. In turn, Jill does their housekeeping. A vital relationship has been restored.
